A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote

I think during the holiday season it’s a comfort to the spirit to read something tender and uplifting.  If you haven’t already read it, A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote fits the bill.  If you’ve already read it, it’s worth a reread.

Best friends come in different shapes and sizes.  The story (autobiographical) tracks an odd, but heartwarming, friendship between a lonely seven-year-old boy and his old, and a little bit dotty, cousin.  Together they follow their annual quest to make fruitcakes for the holidays.  Funny, uplifting, tender, sad – you will find your own memories of friendship and the season come flooding back.

It’s one of a kind, and as Miss Sook Falk reflects, “There’s never two of anything.” This year I’m reading it to my 11 and 15-year-old grandkids.
