Native Speaker, by Chang-rae Lee

Henry Park has spent his entire life trying to become a “true American” – a native speaker – in his adopted country.  His harsh Korean upbringing inhibits his quest.  He cannot break out of his Korean world of hiding emotions but remembering everything.  He becomes alienated – a “stranger in a strange land”.  He is employed as a corporate spy.  His marriage to an American woman becomes strained.  His young son dies in a tragic accident. Then he is assigned to spy on a rising Korean-American politician.  He must try to figure out who he really is amid the chaos of a rocky marriage, losing a child, his relationship with his father, and the ethno-political tensions of New York City.

Native Speaker, by Chang-rae Lee tackles themes of cultural alienation, father-son relationships, loyalty and betrayal, and the quest to know oneself. An engaging read.  Broadens other-cultural understanding. Gives the reader something to think about.  Definitely worth your time.
